CHAIRMAN, Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Attahiru Jega, on Wednesday, said the commission would employ about 4,000 workers before the end of the year, to reinforce its current 12,000 staff strength in preparation for the 2015 general election.
This is coming just as he reinforced call for the establishment of election violence tribunal which, he said, would efficiently and timely dispense election violence cases, noting that such move would deepen democracy in the country.
The INEC boss said this during an interactive session with the House of Representatives Committee on Electoral Matters, adding that the commission was currently overwhelmed by the huge number of prosecution in its hands.
He said the commission had prosecuted about 200 electoral offenders, but was still faced with about 870,000 others, charged with multiple voter registration.
“There is a need for this committee to go back to the Justice Muhammed Uwais-led panel report on election violence commission, because our electoral process will continue to be challenged if not addressed holistically,” he said.
Speaking earlier, the chairman of the committee, Jerry Manwe, had promised that it would collaborate with the commission in its efforts towards deepening democracy in the country.
