JOB TITLE: SENIOR SCIENTIST – NUTRITIONAL DRINKS
LOCATION: Lagos, Nigeria
REPORTING TO (JOB TITLE): Technical Manager

JOB PURPOSE/SCOPE
To lead or manage the delivery of elements of the new products, claims and technology research & development for Nutrition Category brands in Africa, primarily Horlicks, Lucozade and Ribena, from product development brief to final product dossier, that contributes to delivering the growth requirements of the Business
To provide effective Scientific & Technical Stewardship for the Nutrition Category Business in support of the business purpose.
To lead new product development projects within the agreed programme.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Manages one or more projects in support of local plans. Exercises a wide degree of independent, technical sophistication in accomplishing assigned objectives..
Ensures all work is conducted in accordance with written procedures (e.g. Quality Management System, Work Instructions, Standard Operating Procedures) and regulated Health & Safety requirements and Guidelines.
Independently designs and commissions experiments and carries out scientific work with an awareness of state-of-the-art technology. Creates project plans to fit overall project objectives.
Maintains awareness of scientific literature to assist work progression and understanding.
Creates and maintains good working relationships within the Nutrition category (local Commercial teams and central R&D) ,
Ensures the maintenance of precise experimental records; the issue of reports at project milestones; written invention records to protect scientific discoveries. Sets and resets priorities to remain focused on objectives in rapidly changing circumstances.
Authors or co-authors internal reports, external publications and/or development plans
Identifies, challenges, develops and implements written procedures (e.g. quality and safety), methods and guidelines.
Ensures all work is conducted following good scientific practice (always) and Good Manufacturing Practice (where required).
Ensures the use of Product Vision and LIMS to record the formulation, testing and specification of Nutritional Healthcare products
Defines new methodologies (including new technologies, new methods, processes or materials and assessing innovative technology and equipment to improve working practice(s)).
Ensures that agreed areas of the department are equipped, maintained and operated to standards expected by GSK
Reviews and approves Department quality documentation (including SOPs, validation protocols and reports). This may also include preparation of, or contribution to, Departmental quality documentation.
Responsible for highlighting own training needs and working with his/ her manager to develop a training plan and achieve training goals.
Responsible for training self and others in technology and laboratory responsibilities (including coaching, mentoring and elements of personal development).

QUALIFICATIONS, EXPERIENCE
A PhD or MSc in a food-related science field
Minimum of 10 years experience in research and development function in the Food & Drinks manufacturing industry
Membership of a relevant professional body will be an added advantage
